The Bonn International Graduate School (BIGS) Immunosciences and Infection provides a common framework for all PhD students in the fields of immunology and infectious disease. Its programs include the International Immunology Training Program Bonn (IITB) established in 2013 by ImmunoSensation, the International Research Training Group on Immunology Bo&MeRanG(IRTG 2168) and other international PhD student exchange programs.
The scientific curriculum consists of a 3-year structured PhD program and offers focused soft skill courses, as well as technical workshops, seminar series with invited guest speakers, and funding for research visits abroad. Our programs have an inherently immunological background and focus and thus complement the Promotion plus offers of the University.
The students’ individual progress is monitored by a central quality system, including an annual meeting with the thesis committee and regular progress reports. Moreover, PhD students have the opportunity to present and discuss their data at yearly scientific cluster retreats, which are organized by the students. We cooperate with the German Society for Immunology (DGfI), so that our students can participate in the DGfI Autumn School and the DGfI Translational Immunology School. Furthermore, joint training with other graduate schools in Bonn is offered, in particular with BIGS Neuroscience, LIMES-IGS and BIGS Clinical and Population Science.
