I am a cancer researcher trained in cell bi-ology, immunology and molecular oncolo-gy. I have made major contributions to the discoveries that defects in cell death can cause cancer, autoimmune disease and impair the response of cancers to chemo-therapy. My current work aims to reach a detailed understanding of the molecular control of programmed cell death. My team is ex-ploiting this knowledge to develop novel treatments for cancer and autoimmune diseases that directly activate the cell death machinery.

Santiago F. González holds two PhD degrees, one in microbiology from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and one in immunology from the University of Copenhagen (Denmark). He has been awarded three EU Marie Curie Fellowships. He found during his work in Harvard that dendritic cells residing in the lymph node medulla use the lectin receptor SIGN-R1 to capture lymph-borne influenza virus and promote humoral immunity. These results have important implications for the generation of durable humoral immunity to viral pathogens through vaccination and were published in Nature Immunology. In November 2012 he joined the Institute for Research in Biomedicine in Bellinzona as a group leader studying pathogen-host interaction.

Title
Immunoresolvants as key players in the regulation of host immune responses

Jesmond Dalli read for his Ph.D at Queen Mary University of London, he trained at Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital with Prof. Charles Serhan. He is Reader in Molecular Pharmacology and the Director of the QMUL Lipid mediator Unit at the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and Queen Mary College.  Using a multidisciplinary approach his research is focused on the structural elucidation of novel omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid-derived bioactive mediators and determining the regulation of these molecules during health and diseases. His research also aims to assess cellular targets and molecular mechanisms through which these mediators exert their immune directed actions in inflammation-resolution, clearance of bacterial infections and tissue repair/regeneration. More recently his lab has also focused on the role of the pro-resolving mediators in mediating the immune directed actions of the nervous system, primarily the vagus nerve.
