Scientific talk by Prof. Dr. Christiane Schwieren,
Research focused on gender- and diversity-related topics, Equal Opportunity Officer, Heidelberg University
afterwards discussion, Networking & Exchange with Drinks and Snacks
Gender Equality often has a strong focus on women – in different ways:
A lot of research and initiatives focus on how to adapt women to the system, while more recently the focus shifted towards structural change. Structural approaches to gender equality must also include men - both as subjects of research and as active participants in EDI (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) practice. Key considerations include:
- Men are often affected by EDI policies, directly or indirectly and this should not be ignored
- Men could also profit from some EDI initiatives (e.g. work-life balance, improved work climate)
- Men are important allies, especially in male-dominated fields.
- Men are taken as “default” – but this can bias and limit our thinking about behaviour or workplace structures
- Men & boys are nowadays sometimes perceived and described in a negative way, which deserves attention
The talk does not provide final conclusions or solutions, but rather focuses on what questions we might ask, and how we could include a perspective on men and of men in our research and practice of gender equality.
