The inter-disciplinary work of Dr. Susanne V. Schmidt aims to support clinicians in the diagnosis of rare diseases by novel diagnostic strategies and tools. Her research is focused on the decipherment of transcriptional and epigenetic mechanisms that modulate immune cell functions. As monocytes are major drivers of inflammation, molecular mechanisms leading to malfunctions or abberations of monocyte programming, e.g. in severe cases of COVID-19, are of a special interest to her.
