Our research combines aspects of virology, immunology and RNA biology to identify specific immune-activating viral RNAs. In addition, we have a special focus on the role of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in viral infections. For this purpose, we recently developed a method which enables the distinction between virus and EV-mediated effects and the study of both pro- and antiviral effects of EVs under natural conditions. Furthermore, we investigate how EVs released from virus-infected cells lead to immune activation in non-infected immune cells.
