4th International School on Advanced Immunology

Outstanding junior researchers in immunology from all over the world gathered in Maria Laach, Germany, this September. The monastery was the venue of the 4^thImmunoSensation²–IFReC International School on Advanced Immunology. The series was successfully launched in 2022 in Japan as a joint endeavor of the Bonn Cluster of Excellence ImmunoSensation²and our partner IFReC in Osaka, Japan. It is held annually, alternating between Germany and Japan, connecting the next generation of interdisciplinary immunologists and offering a new educational opportunity for outstanding PhD students and junior postdocs.

Immunology is evolving at a remarkable pace, transforming the landscape of modern medicine and public health. A key scientific challenge in this transformation is immunodiversity, the broad spectrum of immunology shaped by genetic, epigenetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, as well as aging. This year's International School on Advanced Immunology aimed to support these efforts by bringing together leading experts and promising young scientists in the field to foster strong research networks and address the scientific challenges ahead. A selection of 47 international doctoral students and early-career scientists from over 20 different countries gathered in Maria Laach to exchange ideas with 15 world-leading immunologists.

Doors Open with the Mouse: Young Scientists Explore Light and Optogenetics in the Laboratory

7 Oct 2026 —The curious orange mouse is part of German television history. For generations, the children's programme “Die Sendung mit der Maus” (“The Show with the Mouse”) has explained everyday phenomena and scientific questions to young viewers. Since 2011, the Mouse has also been opening doors to places that are normally not accessible to the public. During the annual “Türen auf mit der Maus” (“Doors Open with the Mouse”) event, institutions, companies and research laboratories across Germany invite children to visit their facilities, learn about their work and explore scientific phenomena first-hand.

University of Bonn’s StadtLandMitmachBus stops in Linz am Rhein

23 Sept 2026 —What will the medicine of the future look like? The Science Year 2026, launched by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), is exploring this question. With funding from the Science Year, the University of Bonn is currently taking its StadtLandMitmachBus to rural communities across the Rhineland. On Friday, October 2, 2026, from 6 to 10 pm, the science bus will stop at the “First Friday” event at the market square in Linz am Rhein.

Cancer Network Bonn Workshop Brings Basic and Clinical Oncology Together

23 Sept 2026 —How can cancer research in Bonn be better connected, and how can scientific findings be translated into clinical applications? Around 60 researchers from Bonn University Hospital (UKB), the University of Bonn, LIMES and the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) came together on 29 June for the first Cancer Network Bonn Workshop. The event brought together researchers from basic, translational and clinical oncology to exchange ideas and discuss opportunities for future collaboration.
