“We are a University of Excellence”

The University of Bonn is one of only eleven Universities of Excellence in Germany appointed today and one of two in North Rhine-Westphalia. With the six Clusters of Excellence acquired last September, the University of Bonn is the most successful university in the Germany-wide Excellence competition. We are happy and proud to be part of that excellent University.

We look forward to continue our excellent research in this great scientific environment.

€25 Million for AI-Powered Cancer Research in Bonn

—University Hospital Bonn (UKB), the University of Bonn and the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are using funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia to establish a joint research infrastructure. The aim is to use AI to design and optimize potential cancer therapeutics and subsequently test them in the laboratory. Minister-President Hendrik Wüst and Minister of Science Ina Brandes presented the funding commitment today at the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Frank Holz Nominated for the Science Breakthrough of the Year 2026

—A remarkable achievement for the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Bonn: Prof. Dr. Frank G. Holz, Director of the Department of Ophthalmology at the UKB and Professor at the University of Bonn, has been shortlisted for the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year 2026 in the Life Sciences category. His project is now among the 30 most outstanding scientific innovations worldwide in this category, recognized by the prestigious Falling Walls Science Summit. Being shortlisted alone represents a significant international distinction.

Hunting for New Angles

—New research questions often arise where different methods, mindsets and subject-specific cultures meet, and it is these kinds of encounter that Professor Elvira Mass and Professor Tatjana Tchumatchenko want to make happen in a targeted way in future. The two researchers have been picked as Henriette Herz Scouts by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
