“We are a University of Excellence”

The University of Bonn is one of only eleven Universities of Excellence in Germany appointed today and one of two in North Rhine-Westphalia. With the six Clusters of Excellence acquired last September, the University of Bonn is the most successful university in the Germany-wide Excellence competition. We are happy and proud to be part of that excellent University.

We look forward to continue our excellent research in this great scientific environment.

Making Cancer Cells More Predictable: PRECISE Aims to Forecast Therapeutically Actionable Vulnerabilities

Which genes and signaling pathways does a cancer cell require to survive? And which of these could serve as therapeutic targets? The pan-European initiative PRECISE aims to identify such vulnerabilities not only through labor-intensive laboratory experiments but also by predicting them using computational models. The UKB and the University of Bonn, represented by Prof. Dr. Maximilian Billmann and Prof. Dr. Jonathan Schmid-Burgk, are among the founding partners of the consortium. The scientific vision of the initiative has now been published in a commentary in Nature Genetics.

The European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) has establishment a new Task Force on Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (CLE), led by ImmunoSensation³ member Jörg Wenzel. CLE, as autoimmune disease of the skin, is a prime example of chronic inflammatory dysregulation, leading to a severe disease burden. The treatment of cutaneous lupus continues to face unresolved clinical challenges. The CLE Task Force is set up to push the boundaries of clinical care, update guidelines, and advance collaborative research across Europe.

Two years of the Marvin Supercomputer: Researchers in Bonn present their projects

Two years after it went into operation, the University of Bonn celebrated the Marvin Supercomputer with a community event at the Research and Technology Center for Detector Physics (FTD). Researchers from various disciplines presented projects that had been carried out using high-performance computing and used the event as an opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange. A team lead by ImmunoSensation³ members Prof. Dr. Michael Hölzel (Institute of Experimental Oncology) and PD Dr. Gregor Hagelueken (Institute of Structural Biology) use Marvin to design new proteins.
