Tobias-Welte Prize for Anna Aschenbrenner

Dr. Anna Aschenbrenner, a researcher at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Bonn, has received the Tobias-Welte Prize from the German Sepsis Society, endowed with 3,000 Euros. She was honored for her pioneering work published in Cell, in which she and her team uncovered the molecular mechanisms underlying the life-saving effects of dexamethasone in severe COVID-19.

The research was conducted in close collaboration with the Charité Berlin and used single-cell analyses to investigate how individual immune cells respond to the treatment. The team discovered that changes in specific white blood cell populations serve as early indicators of whether the therapy is likely to be successful. These insights not only deepen the understanding of dexamethasone’s mechanism of action but also provide novel insights for the development of personalized therapeutic approaches and companion diagnostics in other inflammatory diseases. Building on these findings, Dr. Aschenbrenner and her team are now applying similar precision medicine strategies to explore new avenues in dementia research.
